Greener Cities

Greener Cities Collective

Challenge

African cities are urbanizing rapidly, but green spaces are disappearing. The result is hotter cities, poorer air quality, food insecurity, and fewer communal spaces for connection and wellbeing. While the need for urban greening is urgent, efforts are often fragmented, underfunded, and disconnected from the communities they are meant to serve.

Solution

Greener Cities is a collective of individuals and organizations on a mission to bring more greenery into Africa’s cities. We transform underutilized urban spaces—like schools, hospitals, and community centers—into gardens and green hubs. These spaces serve as centers for environmental education, food production, creative expression, and community building. By co-creating with local residents, we ensure that greening projects are sustainable, scalable, and deeply rooted in community ownership.

Traction

Greener Cities has launched pilot projects in Nigeria, starting with community gardens in schools. These initiatives have engaged students, teachers, and residents in gardening and tree planting, climate action, and environmental stewardship. With a growing network of partners in education, health, and civil society, Greener Cities is building momentum toward a replicable model for citywide greening across Africa.
